En {{1870}}, après la défaite de Sedan et l'effondrement du Second Empire auquel les habitants de la péninsule s'étaient massivement ralliés, un épisode illustre très bien cette défiance.
Devant le péril prussien, le républicain {{Gambetta}} surmonte ses appréhensions envers une population pour lui conservatrice et se décide à ordonner la levée d'une « {armée de Bretagne} ». Bientôt, 60.000 hommes sont réunis dans la Sarthe, au nord-ouest du Mans, au camp de Conlie, pour recevoir une indispensable instruction militaire. Il est grand temps, car les ennemis arrivent.
Mais - prudence plutôt qu'imprévoyance -, les soldats n'ont guère pour s'entraîner qu'un fusil pour cinq. En ce mois de novembre, ils effectuent leurs exercices dans la boue par un temps épouvantable, le froid le disputant à la pluie. Ces combattants partiront-ils bientôt libérer la patrie ? Non, car Gambetta et le gouvernement se ravisent : on ne peut envoyer au front {« une armée de chouans »} qui pourrait passer à l'ennemi ou du moins refuser l'engagement.

Méfiance... On convient donc de fondre les Bretons dans un ensemble vraiment français plutôt que de les laisser agir seuls. Plusieurs de leurs contingents sont envoyés dans l'armée de la Loire. Mais la rumeur officielle les a précédés : ils sont {« reçus par les habitants comme des ennemis... non des compatriotes ».} Lorsqu'enfin ils participent à la bataille du Mans, en janvier 1871, c'est avec des armes rouillées, presque inutilisables. Prévoyance, même dans l'adversité.
