Même dans les lieux les plus acquis à l'Église, la religion connaît des évolutions annonciatrices de changements : dans le bas {{Léon}}, en 1897, les prêtres paroissiaux font élire l'abbé {{Gayraud}}, un démocrate chrétien, malgré l'opposition de la hiérarchie cléricale.
Le Sillon de {{Marc Sangnier}}, pétri lui aussi de démocratie chrétienne, s'implante dans l'ancienne province, à la fin du siècle et au début du suivant. Le mouvement, bien installé dans le Finistère, connaît un coup d'arrêt lorsque {{Pie X}} le condamne en 1910, pour dérive progressive vers le socialisme.
On voit même apparaître, en écho à la parole de {{Léon XIII}} et de sa célèbre encyclique « Rerum novarum » prônant en 1891 un catholicisme social, une presse républicaine conforme à ses principes : en 1899, un ecclésiastique, {{l'abbé Félix Trochu}}, crée avec l'aide d'un noble libéral, {{Emmanuel Desgrées du Lou}}, le {{journal Ouest-Éclair}}. Le succès du quotidien est rapide et considérable 12 000 exemplaires dès 1901, 125 000 en 1911.
