Quant au Coran, il appelle, en effet, les musulmans à lutter les armes à la main contre les ennemis, de l'islam, mais dans des situations bien précises où la communauté des croyants (I'Umma) est menacée dans son existence.
L'exemple du Prophète Muhammad incite davantage à la conciliation, à la signature de traités diplomatiques plutôt qu'à l'usage de la force brutale. D'ailleurs, durant l'essentiel de son histoire, au Proche-Orient comme dans le reste de l'Asie où il est solidement implanté, l'islam a préféré la diplomatie à la guerre, la tolérance à l'intolérance.
Et le recours au jihâd - à la guerre sainte n'a pas été plus fréquent que le recours des Eglises chrétiennes à la croisade... Il est ainsi frappant que la guerre l'indépendance de l'Algérie, qui opposait pourtant un peuple totalement musulman à une puissance coloniale de culture majoritairement chrétienne, n'a pas été menée au nom de Dieu et de l'islam, mais simplement au nom du droit des peuples à disposer d'eux-mêmes.
