Les intégristes masquent, la plupart du temps, leur ignorance ou leur volonté de pouvoir tyrannique, par le refus de laisser libre cours à la réflexion et à la discussion. Cette attitude n'est ni conforme à la tradition musulmane authentique, ni conforme à la tradition chrétienne ou juive.
Dans les Eglises d'Orient et d'Occident, les conciles (assemblées d'évêques et de théologiens) ont été des occasions répétées de faire le point sur ce qu'il convenait d'énoncer comme vérités de foi, et sur ce qu'il convenait de faire pour mieux témoigner de la foi reçue.
De même, en islam, l'{ijtihad}, ou effort d'interprétation, a entretenu l'intelligence de la foi durant des siècles, et c'est lorsque cet effort intellectuel, créatif et discipliné à la fois, a eu le plus de liberté de s'exercer que les sociétés musulmanes ont été les plus dynamiques.
Les circonstances fluctuantes de la vie des hommes et des sociétés exigent, de fait, que les appels de Dieu soient compris en relation avec le vécu des hommes, et non pas dans l'abstraction. La Révélation, en effet, est une Parole vivante dans un monde vivant.

Pendant des siècles, des sociétés musulmanes entières ne se sont pas préoccupées d'imposer une coiffure particulière aux femmes. En étaient-elles pour autant moins musulmanes, moins soucieuses de vivre sous le regard aimant de Dieu ? Aujourd'hui, en revanche, certains courants islamiques semblent placer l'essentiel du témoignage musulman dans la “ couverture ” du corps des femmes ! Or la lecture des passages du Coran relatifs au voile, contenus pour l'essentiel dans la sourate 33, montre que le voile a été instauré non pas pour tenir les femmes en sujétion, mais pour protéger les femmes du Prophète des familiarités indues.
