_ {{« En esprit »}} veut dire : à la racine même, au cœur de l’être. La pauvreté en esprit est intérieure à l’amour.
_ L’amour sans pauvreté n’est pas l’amour (ceci est inintelligible si vous n’en faites pas l’expérience !). C’est pourquoi Dieu même est pauvre : il est étranger à l’avoir (Dieu n’a rien), car son mode d’exister c’est d’aimer.

Avoir une âme de pauvre (au sens où l’on parle de l’âme d’un violon : c’est sans doute la meilleure traduction de « pauvre en esprit »), c’est
{{être dépossédé de soi}}, donc se laisser mettre en question par l’autre d’une part, et, d’autre part, se fier à lui pour son bonheur à soi.
_ Les deux phrases qui définissent le pauvre sont celles-ci : « Je te fais crédit » (Credo) – c’est la foi – et « je te charge de ma béatitude » - c’est l’espérance.
_ Appuyé sur la foi et sur l’espérance, le pauvre vit dans la charité : il peut servir, se mettre au service de l’autre et des autres, car il est désentravé.

D’un bout à l’autre de la Bible, le pauvre de Yahvé est le serviteur de Yahvé : il est donc dans le Royaume : heureux ceux qui ont une âme de pauvre, car le Royaume des cieux est à eux. Etes-vous entrés dans cette expérience, dans ce style, dans ce type d’existence ? Si oui, le Royaume est à vous. Pour les autres, Jésus vous invite : si vous dites oui, le Royaume deviendra vôtre, c’est-à-dire la relation d’intimité avec Dieu. La béatitude de pauvreté domine tout l’Evangile. Elle serait impensable si Dieu lui-même n’était pas pauvre, c’est-à-dire absolument étranger à l’avoir : Dieu n’a rien, il est tout. Celui qui est tout n’a rien. Et ce tout qu’il est, est un tout donné, il n’est qu’Amour.
