Il faut bien comprendre pourquoi la Bible lie étroitement le péché et la mort, pourquoi {{saint Paul}} par exemple affirme que {« la mort est le salaire du péché ».} Le péché, en son essence, est une affirmation d’autarcie ; le pécheur est celui qui veut être {« comme Dieu »,} c’est-à-dire subsister éternellement en lui-même et par lui-même. Or l’homme ne peut subsister en soi et par soi : vouloir cela, aspirer à cela, c’est en réalité se livrer à la mort.

Mais comment subsister en un autre, ou en d’autres ? Il y a plusieurs voies possibles. L’homme les a toutes essayées.
Il y en a surtout deux.

C’est bien pourquoi les peuples primitifs on toujours considéré le célibat et la stérilité comme une malédiction : n’avoir pas d’enfant, c’est l’impossibilité de survivre ; et avoir beaucoup d’enfants, c’est avoir plus de chance de survivre, c’est une bénédiction.

Au vrai, je ne puis survivre en un autre que s’il existe un Autre qui soit lui-même éternel, et qui m’aime assez pour m’accueillir en Lui. {{On ne peut être immortel qu’en Dieu}}, si Dieu est Amour. Seul un Dieu qui m’aime a la puissance, non pas de m’empêcher de mourir, mais de me ressusciter. Seul l’amour est plus fort que la mort.
