Est-il possible d'aller à Dieu sans passer par l'Église ? Cette question cache un piège.

Dans les religions autres que le christianisme, il est question en effet d'aller à Dieu : de tout temps, on a pressenti qu'il y a, au-delà du monde, un être transcendant, tout-puissant, et les religions ont cherché à élever l'homme pour qu'il aille à ce (ou ces) dieu. On peut bien essayer de s'élever vers Dieu, un peu comme on s'élève vers un idéal. Les artistes ont un idéal esthétique, les savants un idéal scientifique, les hommes politiques un idéal politique. De même, dans ces religions, on a un idéal religieux.

Mais, s'il est question de la divinisation de l'humanité, si tel est l'objet de notre foi et l'originalité même du christianisme, il n'est pas question d'aller à Dieu. On ne va pas se diviniser soi-même, cela n'a absolument aucun sens. C'est Dieu qui vient.
Il n'y a pas de chemin de l'homme à Dieu. Où voulez-vous aller ? Où voulez-vous grimper avec une échelle de corde ? Il y a un chemin de Dieu à l'homme, il s'appelle l'Église.
L'Église est le chemin que Dieu prend pour nous rejoindre. Il ne veut pas diviniser les individus isolément les uns des autres mais l'humanité tout entière. Dieu se donne, l'Église est la visibilité de ce don de Dieu dans l'histoire, elle est la portion d'humanité qui accueille visiblement le don de Dieu.
Notez que Marie, à elle seule, est toute l'Église quand elle dit « oui » à Dieu. Avant d'être une institution, l'Église est accueil de Jésus Christ et communion de ceux qui accueillent Jésus Christ.
