La question est de savoir pour quelles raisons ils refusent l'Église. Il est plus que probable que la plupart d'entre eux refusent l'Église pour de bonnes raisons : ils n'y voient pas la manifestation visible de Jésus Christ mais une organisation qui leur paraît décadente; ils ont l'impression que l'Église est le lieu de toutes les superstitions; ils estiment (ils n'ont pas toujours tort d'ailleurs) qu'elle est l'alliée des puissances de ce monde, etc., bref, ils ne voient dans l'Église qu'une caricature. Je sais bien que souvent nous donnons prise à la caricature, et nous devons faire notre mea culpa.
Il est bien certain que des millions d'hommes qui ne connaissent pas l'Église ou qui, la connaissant, ne veulent pas en entendre parler pour les raisons que je viens de dire, appartiennent invisiblement à l'Église, c'est-à-dire sont sauvés, divinisés, auront une éternité comme nous espérons l'avoir (la participation à la vie même de Dieu), dans la mesure où ils obéissent à leur conscience.
Dieu seul peut savoir si quelqu'un appartient ou non à l'Église invisiblement; moi, je n'en suis absolument pas juge. Comme le disait saint Augustin : {
_ « II y en a qui se croient dedans et qui sont dehors; il y en a qui se croient dehors et qui sont dedans. »}
_ La question est de savoir si tous ces hommes que nous appelons des incroyants, à supposer que l'Église puisse leur être présentée telle qu'elle est, sans caricature, c'est-à-dire comme le signe historique de notre divinisation, y adhéreraient ou non.
