Et brusquement je suis trahi dans mon élan, je trébuche et m'effondre en silence.
Tout se passait bien, je contrôlais la situation, je tenais l'attention de cet auditoire dans ma main. Mais ma voix se voile, mon regard se brouille. Je me sens lourd comme un arbre qui tombe. Ma gorge se serre, au point que je me vois contraint d'interrompre mon numéro. Je ne comprends pas ce qui m'arrive. Les autres non plus, d'ailleurs. Ils étaient partis pour se bidonner un bon coup, et voilà que le clown est devenu triste. Je cherche des regards sur lesquels m'appuyer.

Les sourires se fanent, les uns après les autres. J'aimerais poursuivre l'exposé spirituel que j'avais prévu, mais c'est un tout autre discours qui sort de ma bouche. Je m'entends distinctement dire à ces inconnus combien cette catéchèse me remue, au-delà de ce que je pouvais imaginer. Combien ce que j'ai entendu dans cette pièce depuis plusieurs semaines m'a parfois ému. Comment j'y pense, dans la journée, dans mon lit, au milieu d'une conversation, comment j'y pense tout le temps... Ce programme, dans lequel je m'étais inscrit en touriste, en cynique désabusé et content de lui, m'a fait réfléchir. Je découvre ces paroles tandis que je les prononce.
L'émotion qui m'inonde est inattendue et ne m'appartient pas. J'ai les larmes aux yeux. J'espère que cela ne se voit pas. Ma voix est altérée, elle s'étrangle par moment. Heureusement, ces braves gens ne la connaissaient pas.
Je dominais mon sujet et me voilà dépassé. Dépassé par cette sensation inconnue qui me révèle un sentiment profond, tapi en moi, un sentiment que je ne saurais qualifier, car il vient de se montrer pour la première fois au grand jour. Il m'intimide. J'ai l'impression de pouvoir toucher quelque chose que je ne sais pas.
