J'aime beaucoup l'eau. Moins que la lumière, bien sûr, qui va si vite, et même plus vite que tout. Mais beaucoup. Quand je l'ai vue couler en cascades du haut des montagnes et des glaciers, s'étaler dans les plaines en longs rubans paresseux, se rassembler en foule entre les continents, tomber du ciel goutte à goutte sur les forêts et les champs, j'ai éprouvé du bonheur. Elle est imprévisible. Elle m'étonnera toujours. Quand je l'ai inventée, je n'étais pas mécontent
Elle est sérieuse et frivole. Elle est solide et fluide. Tu la prends dans tes mains, elle glisse entre tes doigts. C'est une matière à la fois assez souple et assez résistante pour que tu puisses pénétrer en elle et qu'elle puisse pénétrer en toi. L'eau coule de ville en ville, les bateaux la labourent, elle rend la terre fertile et, sous le soleil brûlant, tu te jettes dans ses bras et elle apaise ta soif. Elle sait aussi tuer avec une sûreté infaillible. Insaisissable et changeante, l'eau est l'image de la vie : elle est cruelle comme elle et enchanteresse comme elle.
