Relisons rapidement le merveilleux récit des pèlerins d'Emmaüs. Le Christ ne s'impose pas aux marcheurs. Il ne dit pas
_ {« réjouissez-vous, c'est moi, le Seigneur ressuscité »}.
_ Il marche avec eux, les interroge :{
_ «Quels sont donc ces propos que vous échangez en marchant?», }
_ et eux racontent leur vie, leurs espoirs déçus, leur abattement.
Celui en qui ils avaient cru est mort sur la croix comme un malfaiteur... Là, il pourrait de nouveau dire {
_ « regardez, c'est moi ». }
_ Mais non, il entre dans le dialogue, raconte pour eux l'Écriture. Et lorsqu'il arrive au village, ils le retiennent : {
_ «Reste avec nous, car le soir tombe...» }
_ Et il accepte l'invitation, sous leur toit, à leur table. Le partage de la parole devient le partage du pain. Il vient enfin le happy end que nous lecteurs nous attendons, en retenant notre souffle :{
_ « Leurs yeux s'ouvrirent et ils le reconnurent... »}
II n'est plus là, mais la joie demeure : {
_ « Notre cœur n'était-il pas tout brûlant au-dedans de nous, quand il nous parlait en chemin... » }
Et il n'y a plus de nuit qui compte, car pour eux, la nuit n'est plus la nuit :{
_ «À cette heure même, ils partirent et retournèrent à Jérusalem. » }
_ Et ils partagent ce qu'ils ont vu.
Remarquons que le Christ ne leur a rien demandé, ne Ies pas envoyés, mais ils ne peuvent pas se taire. Ils courent vers Jérusalem, la joie leur donne des ailes. Quand on les imagine ainsi, viennent les mots du prophète Isaïe qui semblent écrits pour eux : {
_ « Qu 'ils sont beaux, sur les montagnes, les pieds du messager qui annonce la paix, du messager de bonnes nouvelles qui annonce le salut... »}
Spontanément, dans cette histoire, nous nous identifions au Christ, nous pensons que nous devons faire comme le Christ,{ « cheminer »} avec l'humanité, l'écouter, l'entendre. Mais il nous faut songer que nous sommes aussi les marcheurs d'Emmaüs.
Ceux que nous rencontrons sur la route ne sont peut-être pas ceux à qui nous avons quelque chose à dire, mais ceux qui, en figure du Christ, nous disent, nous révèlent ce qui est précieux, nécessaire, indispensable. Combien de fois avons-nous croisé le Christ sans le voir, sans l'entendre, parce que nous avions quelque chose à dire, parce que nous avons parlé avant d'écouter ?
