L'intégrisme est en revanche une volonté de vivre sa religion en l'imposant aux autres. Il se traduit par le non-respect de l'identité de l'autre. Il cherche à contraindre, à imposer une lecture du monde, de l'homme, des rapports entre politique et mystique. Il ne peut y avoir de place pour cette attitude dans la République française.

Que les choses soient claires. Les règles fondamentales de la laïcité n'ont pas à changer parce que cela arrangerait tel ou tel. En revanche, je dis que nous devons revenir à une laïcité active, et non passive ou honteuse parce qu'il s'agit de religion. Pour ma part, je n'ai pas une vision sectaire de la laïcité. Cela n'aurait pas de sens, à l'aune de l'histoire de France, de considérer tout ce qui concerne le religieux comme dangereux, illégitime, suspect.
Jusqu'à une date récente, nombre de responsables politiques ou syndicaux ont eu une vision sectaire de la laïcité, une vision marquée par le souci de revanche. Aujourd'hui, nous arrivons heureusement à une vision plus équilibrée. Par suite, si Fouad Alaoui dénonce deux intégrismes, l'intégrisme laïque et l'intégrisme musulman, je ne peux ni ne veux lui donner tort. Mais il doit le faire avec la même force, et non pas attendre que l'un s'affaisse pour dénoncer l'autre. Les deux doivent être rejetés avec une égale intensité. {(p. 88)}
